When Your Taxes Are Due in 2017
Most of us know the tax deadline as April 15. But, just like last year, this year's deadline is different.
For the 2016 tax year, federal tax payments and personal income tax filings are due on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.
Why the Date Change?
The IRS delays the traditional April 15 due date if it falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. Since April 15 falls on a Saturday this year — and since the next business day is a holiday in Washington, D.C. (Emancipation Day) — taxes are now due on April 18.
The deadline for those who file in Maine and Massachusetts is actually one day later, since those states observe Patriots Day on April 18.
But for those of us here in Montana, we must report our taxes for duty on April 18. (That means you have until then to make contributions to your IRA, too!)
What If I Need an Extension?
If you have extenuating circumstances (like, your tax forms get lost in the mail), you can try filing for an extension with Form 4868, which gives you until October 17, 2017, to file your taxes for 2016.
Note, though, that Form 4868 allow for paperwork only — it doesn't extend the time you have to pay your taxes. So, to avoid penalties or interest on unpaid tax balances, it's best to make an estimated tax payment before the April 18 deadline.
