You might have locked your doors, but Old Man Winter is about to come a-knocking. When he arrives, make sure you--and your SUV--are ready for him.

If you own an SUV, you're already better off than most people on the road when it starts to get icy. But although your four-wheel drive is definitely an asset, you're still not immune to breakdowns, flat tires, or other problems that arise when the weather takes a turn for the worse.

But we've got you covered. At Denny Menholt Billings Nissan, we put together our top nine tips for preparing your Billings SUV for winter in Montana.

Top 9 Tips for Preparing Your SUV for Winter in MT

  1. Check your tire pressure. PSI points fluctuate much more in winter than any other season, so it's important to maintain the recommended tire pressure for your SUV.
  2. Switch to winter tires. Even better than checking your tire pressure is getting new tires altogether. Winter tires are specially designed to withstand cold temperatures, so they provide much better traction than summer or all-season tires.
  3. Get your SUV's battery and electrical system checked. If your batteries are more than five years old, consider getting new ones altogether.
  4. Clean and fill up your antifreeze. Make sure you use a high-quality coolant and a 50-50 solution for the best protection against freezing and corrosion.
  5. Use winter wiper blades and fluid. For optimal windshield visibility, get a solvent with de-icing properties.
  6. Keep your SUV's fuel tank full. When your gas tank gets below the halfway mark, you run the risk of condensation, freezing, and even engine malfunction. Keep your fuel tank as full as possible at all times.
  7. Repair or replace old brakes. If you've noticed your SUV's brakes or pads functioning poorly, do not ignore them. Get them inspected, repaired, or replaced ASAP.
  8. Get your oil changed. Ask for "winter weight" oil for easier start-up and less engine strain. You might also want to see if your technician can check your SUV's fuel, air, and transmission filters at the same time.
  9. Carry an emergency kit. When all else fails, act like a Boy Scout and be prepared. Keep your SUV's trunk stocked with a spare winter tire, tire chains and tool kit, abrasive material for traction, a show shovel and ice scraper, a flashlight, flares and matches, jumper cables, and a first aid kit. You never know when you might need it!
